Channelling Marilyn

Anna Sui - Loose Powder #700
$48 - yesstyle.com

The looks I have chosen really express the muse-like quality of Marilyn Monroe rather than the vamp. In the first look the wrap dress is really her all over. Had it been a maxi-dress it would have been perfect but being knee length I have chosen some print narrow trousers to go underneath without dulling down the shape of the dress. However, you may prefer wider leg trousers, or alternatively, a maxi dress if you can find one! This look would also work with a sleeveless dress and cardigan. If the waist is too much emphasised here for you, you would need to cover up with a mac outside the house/private party and save this for a special occasion like a date with Hubby!

The second look is less urban and more formalized. The high waisted trousers were huge during that period in fashion history and have made a welcome come back in the last 3 years. however, they are pretty tailored so to enjoy wearing them discreetly and to make the Juno-esque orange bolero more covering, wear an animal print tunic with the sleeves frilling out from inside the bolero. Waist belt optional, according to your feelings on the matter. These 1950s style peep-toe heels are all about Marilyn's glamour.

Are there any style icons you would like me to channel for you?

Now I have been to Rome, and I have to say that this vintage vibe still works today. However, for style and modesty concious hijabis and non-hijabis alike I have to recommend the wearing of chic wide-legged trousers in replacement of Audreys calf-length skirt. The reasons for this would become evident as you traipse around the city looking glamorous and possibly even venture out on a Piaggio! Keep your cool in these vintage inspired looks that still hold their own today...

The first is a pretty femenine look, the second a bit more edgy but at the same time it has a very european air that has stood the test of time in the fashion arena. Stumble into any high street store and you will be able to recreate either of these looks on a shoe-string budget!

Mocktail Mini Menu

I used to adore cocktails but definitely more for the taste than the intoxicating effect. Upon discovering that one of my IT colleagues is a mixologist of the highest calibre I prevailed upon him to email me a mini menu of 'mocktails' for a summer evening with the girls.

Buyer beware: these babies are so delicious that you risk serious fruit juice stomach distension if you over indulge. Keep the nibbles small ladies! And allow the fibrous anti-oxidant goodness to do it's work. Oh, and make an effort for this all-female occasion wont you? *winks*

See below for inspiration...

Peachy Keen

Directions: Fill a Collins glass with ice, add a splash of peach puree and the top off half and half with pineapple and cranberry juices. Shake and serve with a pineapple wedge garnish.

Shirley Temple

Directions: Fill a Collins glass with ice, add a splash of grenadine and the top off two to one with ginger ale and orange. Stir and serve with an orange slice and cocktail cherries.

I am so in love with this Marchesa dress! Nothing like dressing for the occasion...
